Tips for Visitors to Canada

Health insurance

Visitors are NOT COVERED by the Canadian Health Insurance Plan. It is, therefore, recommended that participants arrange their own health and accident insurance. This can be done before leaving home through a local travel agent or medical association.

Taxes

A federal tax (GST) of 5% is applied to most goods and services in Canada. In addition, a provincial sales tax in Ontario of 8% is also applied to most purchases.

Currency

All transactions in Canadian dollars, although U.S. dollars are widely accepted as Niagara Falls is a popular tourist area and located on the Canada-U.S. border.

Voltage

120 volts, 60 Hertz. Adapters can be purchased for about $10 CAD.
