Report on "Signal Processing Challenges in Wireless Location" - April 14
Professor Ali Sayed, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Editor-in-Chief for
IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, presented a SP Society Sponsored Distinguished
Lecture on the topic of "Signal Processing Challenges in Wireless Location"
to the Toronto Section Members on April 14, 2005 in Ryerson University, Toronto.
38 members from the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, the University of
Western Ontario, and several industrial organizations attended the seminar.
Report on "How to have an effective meeting with your manager" - April 22 event
We started this meeting with a series of questions to
warm us up and give us a head start on the discussion.
We brainstormed on "How often should one meet with
his/her manager? Why is it important to have a good
communication with one's manager? Who should initiate
this? What if one doesn't see eye to eye with his/her
manager?" Replies were so interesting and diverse.
Then we discussed ways one can get the communication
with his/her manager off to a good start and ways on
how to improve it. Know your manager - his/her
strengths and weaknesses. Know yourself - your
strengths and weaknesses. Try to develop a
relationship that fits both yours and his/her needs.
In the second part of the meeting we discussed the
second year of this affinity group. Based on this
discussion and an email recieved on this topic, the following
is the summary of suggested activities for the next
year.
i. Speaker series: successful, dynamic women will talk
about their experiences, 3 this year
ii. Workshop: selected theme "managing stress", 1 this
year
iii. Dinner discussions, 3 this year
iv. Tour of a facility, tentative 1 this year
v. Technical talks
I want to thank the following individuals who shared
their ideas for the second year of this affinity.
Ida Jagaric, Liselle Ramcharan, Rachel Zhan, Sylvia
Raynham, Zei.
Contributed by Visda Vokhshoori, chair
of our Women in Engineering Affinity Group - which organized this event.
