IEEE Toronto Section Year in Review

Last year the IEEE Toronto Section was quite vibrant with its many activities in addition to successfully celebrating 125 years of IEEE through its slogan of "EEE: Fostering technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity Celebrating 125 years of Engineering the Future www.ieee125.org". The section organized close to 21 technical and professional meetings throughout the year.

As a part of the 125th Anniversary, the section organized the very successful 2009 IEEE Toronto International Conference - Science and Technology for Humanity (TIC-STH 2009) at Ryerson University on September 27 - 29 and for the first time the conference was aired online through web conferencing. On the same day, the section celebrated and honored the Development of Pacemaker in Toronto by Dr. John A. Hopps by conferring the invention as an IEEE milestone. A plaque was mounted at the Best Institute, 114 College St. - where the research was performed. In addition the section organized the 2009 - Product Safety Engineering Society Symposium and jointly organized Canadian Conference on Climate Change - CCTC 2009 in Hamilton.

Inspired by the past success, Toronto Section organized its second "Step Up to Senior Member" meeting in May. Over the course of two days the section volunteers addressed an overwhelming number of senior membership application: verified correctness, filled in the on-line senior membership application form and provided references where necessary. All-in-all a total of 49 members were elevated to senior members till Novemeber 2009.

The year continued to be eventful with promoting mentoring of high school students, nurturing new alliances with PMI, completing the representation of the IEEE Societies, releasing of the printed newsletter, organizing the Annual General Meeting & electing of Wai Tung Ng, Xavier Fernando, Marcelo Mota & Pelle Westlind as the new Section officers.

Lastly, on behalf of the section I would like to thank Dr.Alexei Botchkarev (Alex Bot) - the IEEE Toronto Section Chair (2008-9) for living up to demands of being the Chair of the largest Section in Canada. Dr.Botchkarev has spent many days and nights alike promoting the Toronto Section within the IEEE community and delivering on the demands of the section members through his innovative and creative leadership. He passes on the baton to Dr.Wai Tung Ng and Dr.Xavier Fernando as the Section's chair and vice chair respectively.
