IEEE Toronto Section - Help

On-line Community Help Page       frequently asked questions

1   What is this On-line Community ?
This On-line Community is a web site for members to participate in discussions, polls, and chat rooms.   Membership in this community is restricted to members of the IEEE Toronto Section. This site is one of the set of IEEE Communities, many of which can be seen listed on the Main IEEE Online Communities web site. Note that

2   How to find the Toronto community ?
Use URL http://www.ieeecommunities.org/toronto or the link in the left side navigation panel on the home page and many other pages of the IEEE Toronto web site.

3   How to enter the Toronto community ?
Since the site stores cookies on your computer, the opening screen is different depending on whether you are a recognized returning member or not.   If the site does not recognize you, you see the choice below on the "Welcome" screen.   If you were visiting earlier as a member, you will see the "What's New" page immediately without logging in.   If you are recognized as a non-member, you see only the "Join" or "Preview" links.
If you see this choice:
    Join         Login         Preview

Preview allows you limited access to see what the site contains without becoming a member.   You need to check the "Agree" box and click on "Start Previewing", then click "Enter Community", where you can view any posted discussions or polls.

Join is the link to use to become a member.   If you are not already a member of any IEEE On-line Community, choose option A and enter your email address (preferably your IEEE email alias).   If you have been sent an invitation key, enter it.   Otherwise enter your name, etc at the various prompts.   You will see a message indicating that your application has been sent to the site administrator, who needs to respond via email to you.   If you are a member of the Section, your application should be approved.

If you are a member of the Section and your application is not approved, the most likely reason is that your personal data (especially your email address) are not correctly stored in the IEEE membership data base.   To update your personal information on-line, use this link (you will need your IEEE web account username and password).   There is a delay between the time you update your information on-line and its availability for verification.

Login is the link to use if you are already a member - just enter your name and password.   If you have forgotten your password, you can use the displayed option to get it emailed to you (at the address you gave to become a member).

4   What are the parts of the community site ?
The large white panel contains content selected by several of the buttons on the left side.   The light blue bar above contains the "title" of the display in the white panel.   The grey bar contains buttons on the left side which depend on the content selected for the white panel and a Help button on the right side which brings up the IEEE Communities help window.   The "Welcome" page is only initially displayed when a new or unidentified user views the site.   The headings listed below are for the buttons on the left side navigation panel (and a pulldown menu below).   Some of the buttons are only displayed if you can use them - for example, a non-member who is previewing the site will not see the "Members" or "Preferences" buttons.
