Electro-Federation Canada (EFC) is a national, not-for-profit industry association representing over 250 member companies in the electrical, electronics and telecommunications industries in Canada.   Now in its ninth year, the EFC Foundation will award $50,000 to eligible students in the fields of engineering, computer science and business administration, as well as to eligible second or third phase electrical apprentices.   Application Deadline: August 12, 2004 - details

The 2004 Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE) was held May 2 - 5, 2004 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.   This was a very successful conference - 570 papers were scheduled for presentation over three days - sixty oral sessions and one poster session. These paper presentations, all three Sunday workshops, the opening reception, two plenary sessions, two luncheon events, and the awards banquet were well attended and appreciated.   For a full report and access to the plenary presentations, please visit the conference web site - photos (lots of them) are now posted!

The 3rd International Conference for Upcoming Engineers (ICUE) was held May 13-14, 2004 at Ryerson University in Toronto.   The conference featured 85 technical papers (32 from outside Canada), 29 design projects, and 5 state-of-the-art tutorials, culminating in an awards banquet - please read the online conference report for more details as well as this month's newsletter for some selected photos.

Photo of George Eleftheriades Dr. George V. Eleftheriades, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto and chair of our Electromagnetics & Radiation Chapter has just been awarded the prestigous NSERC Steacie Fellowship.   These fellowships are awarded to outstanding Canadian university scientists or engineers, who have earned their doctorate within the last twelve years, and whose research has already earned them an international reputation.   The award includes increased research funding from NSERC and payments to the university to allow the Steacie Fellow to pursue research full-time.   Dr. Eleftheriades' web site contains a quote from the Greek philosopher Plato, which, roughly paraphrased, says that great ideas come from hard work and are born "as light that is kindled by a leaping spark." Put that in a Canadian context more than two millennia later, and Dr. Eleftheriades indeed had a Platonic moment—in a way that amazingly extends the laws of physics and could potentially revolutionize fields from nanotechnology to medical imaging. The spark? He was flipping steak on the BBQ.   To find out what that spark ignited, click here. [3-page PDF]

Applications Joint Chapter Meeting

I welcome you to our website, which is designed to be our members' focal point to keep in touch and up to date, and to introduce visitors to our Section and the activities of its members.   Our interests are primarily technical, in the diverse fields of things electrical such as electrical power generation and distribution, wired and wireless telecommunications, digital networks and data processing, and the ubiquitous computer.   There are many other interests as can be seen by exploring the IEEE Toronto links on the left.

Thank you for visiting, enjoy,
Dr. Kostas Plataniotis
IEEE Toronto Section Chair
