Dr. George V. Eleftheriades, Associate Professor of Electrical and
Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto and chair of our
Electromagnetics & Radiation Chapter has just been awarded the prestigous NSERC Steacie Fellowship.
These fellowships are awarded to outstanding
Canadian university scientists or engineers, who have earned their doctorate
within the last twelve years, and whose research has already earned them an
international reputation. The award includes increased research funding
from NSERC and payments to the university to allow the Steacie Fellow to
pursue research full-time. Dr. Eleftheriades' web site contains a quote
from the Greek philosopher Plato, which, roughly paraphrased, says that great
ideas come from hard work and are born "as light that is kindled by a leaping
spark." Put that in a Canadian context more than two millennia later, and
Dr. Eleftheriades indeed had a Platonic moment—in a way that amazingly extends
the laws of physics and could potentially revolutionize fields from
nanotechnology to medical imaging. The spark? He was flipping steak on the
BBQ. To find out what that spark ignited, click here. [3-page PDF]

I welcome you to our website, which is
designed to be our members' focal point to keep in touch and up to date,
and to introduce visitors to our Section and the activities of its
members. Our interests are primarily technical, in the diverse
fields of things electrical such as electrical power generation and
distribution, wired and wireless telecommunications, digital networks
and data processing, and the ubiquitous computer. There are many
other interests as can be seen by exploring the IEEE Toronto links on
the left.
Thank you for visiting, enjoy,
Dr. Kostas Plataniotis
