| Title: Why Is Texas Smarter Than Ontario In
Automobile Exhaust Monitoring? | |
| Speaker: Dr. Alak Chanda, Ph.D. (Physics) Senior Scientist Unisearch Associates Inc. |
| Summary: LasIR - A portable commercial tunable diode laser absorption spectrometer system is developed for remote measurements of various industrial and ambient air pollutants. It is now being used worldwide as a process control tool and for the measurement of various gases down to concentration levels of sub-parts per billion. In a latest advancement, the LasIR has been configured to make simultaneous measurements of CO and CO2 with a time response of 10 ms suitable for transient event measurements such as vehicle exhaust monitoring. The use of fiber optic coupling allows the analyzer to be situated remotely from the cross-road monitoring head, which is small and unobtrusive. Several such units have been provided to BAE Systems, who has integrated the LasIR with vehicle license plate recognition, speed and acceleration for use in a monitoring program for the State of Texas. Units are currently monitoring vehicle emissions in the Houston, Dallas and El Paso metropolitan areas. Because of their small size and ease of setup the monitoring sites can be changed on a daily basis. This has allowed a large number of different vehicles to be monitored in a short period of time. A description of the instrumentation, projected improvements to permit the addition of NO and hydrocarbon emissions measurements and the results obtained to date both on audit vehicles (used to test the accuracy of the technique) and real vehicle emissions will be presented. |
