Abstract

I will discuss my group's recent work on silicon on insulator (SOI) photonics for on-chip lightwave circuits in linear and nonlinear optics. Part of the talk will focus on disorder effects which are much more severe for high index contrast sub-micron scale SOI photonics than in any previous generation of integrated optics. We have shown that some proposed applications, such as slow light, are severely impacted by disorder. On the other hand, disorder in SOI photonics can also enable the realization of phenomena such as light localization, which may offer new approaches to achieve desired functionality.
