| Abstract and Biography |
Professor Shelley McKellar is Associate Professor at the University
of Western Ontario in the History Department with cross-appointment to
the History of Medicine Program, Schulich School of Medicine and
Dentristry. She is a medical historian interested in the role of
medical technology in fighting disease, specifically medical and
social expectations, risks and limitations. She is currently writing
a history of bioengineering efforts to invent devices to assist and
replace the diseased heart, focusing on the artificial heart. This
interest grew out of earlier research on the expansion of surgical
treatment in the twentieth century, which was the subject of her first
book, Surgical Limits: The Life of Gordon Murray (University of
Toronto Press, 2003).
