Speaker Profile

Dr. Brian Courtney is a trainee in the Adult Cardiology Program at the University of Toronto. His academic background began with a BASc of Computer Engineering (University of Waterloo, 1997), after which he worked for a medical instrument manufacturing company in the Toronto area. This was followed by a Masters in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University (2000), where he focused on cardiovascular imaging research at the Center for Research in Cardiovascular Interventions. While pursuing an MD degree at Stanford (2004), he and two engineering colleagues founded Kerberos Proximal Solutions, based on an invention that was later commercialized as "the Rinsipirator" to treat coronary and peripheral vascular disease. After reaching a staff of 60+ full-time employees and having used the Rinspirator in over 1000 patients, Kerberos was later acquired (by Fox Hollow Technologies, subsequently acquired by EV3 Inc.). Brian has since been a co-founder of two further medical device companies and is a Scientist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, with a focus on cardiovascular imaging. He will be discussing his experiences and observations over the past decade while training to become a clinical cardiologist, conducting research at the interface of engineering and medicine, and participating in the "bench to bedside" transfer of clinically relevant technologies.
