| Abstract |
Nowadays, the increasing demand of power is forcing to develop solutions for topics such as efficient power distribution, energy storage, high-power systems, economical cost reduction, etcetera. The industrial sector is demanding these achievements in order to have a stable, economically affordable and efficient energy system. The academia has to be focused on the continuous innovation to create the technological solutions to overcome these concerns.
Mainly, renewable energy, power distribution, energy storage and the development of high-power systems will be addressed during the talk showing that currently they present deep interaction and symbiotic relationship. Industrial and research project results will be presented. For instance, for high-power systems, multilevel converters have emerged as a very important alternative in the area of medium-voltage applications. Voltage operation above classic semiconductor limits, lower common mode voltages, near sinusoidal outputs together with small dv/dt's, are some of the characteristics that have made this power converters popular for industry and research. Examples of projects since research till development stages will be presented showing a close cooperation between energy and the power electronics manufacturers and the academia.

| Biography |
Leopoldo G. Franquelo (Fellow, IEEE) received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Seville, Spain, in 1977 and 1980, respectively.
In 1978, he joined the University of Seville, where he has been a Professor since 1986. From 1998 to 2005, he was Director of the Department of Electronic Engineering. His current research interest lies in modulation techniques for multilevel inverters and their application to power electronic systems for renewable energy systems. He leads a large research and teaching team in Spain. In the last five years, he is author of 50 publications in international journals and 165 in international conferences. He has received ten patents and he is an advisor for ten Ph.D. dissertations and 96 R&D projects.
He was Vice President of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society (IES) Spanish Chapter (2002-2003) and Member at Large of IES AdCom (2002-2003). He has been Vice President for conferences of the IES (2004-2007), President Elect (2008-2009), Distinguished Lecturer since 2006. He has been an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics since 2007 and 2010 IES President.
