Abstract

Obtaining a patent can be a lengthy, complex and expensive process. Some of the problem lies in the initial decision of whether pursuing an invention will eventually lead to a patent. Much effort may be wasted if it is subsequently found that research in the same area has already performed, or that the technology has already been patented and invented.

This session will provide an engaging and pragmatic introduction to patents. Participants will learn the initial steps on how to answer the question “What is my invention?” Discussion will surround an introduction to patents, international protection strategies, appropriate (and free) search tools, and performing patent mining sessions. Examples directed specifically to engineering will also be given.

An optional practical exercise may follow (laptops required).
