| Abstract: ICT (information and communications technologies) penetrate virtually all aspects of our lives today. Whether you prefer to call it the Knowledge Society, Innovation Society or the New Economy, our deepening engagement with, and the design of, ICT is influencing the way we work, the way we learn, the way we live, even the way we think. This talk will explore the concept of "humanizing technology", an approach that recognizes the centrality of technology, but understands that much of the technology in use today has not been designed to optimize the experience or desires of the people who use it. Examples from ongoing research will illustrate how taking people seriously informs design in powerful ways. |
| Background of the speaker: Background of the Speaker Gale Moore, PhD sociology, is currently the Executive Director of the University of Toronto's Knowledge Media Design Institute. As a sociologist and sociologist-designer, Gale's primary interests for the past 15 years have been on the social impacts of a variety of ICT technologies in everyday life and on bringing an understanding of people's experience of technology to design. From 1992-1995, Gale was head of social science research for the Ontario Telepresence Project, a $6M industry-university cross-disciplinary consortium supported by the Province of Ontario and a number of firms and corporations. More recent research includes: a CITO funded project on how people experience complex software, initially looking at MSWord, and an international project on regional innovation systems. She is co-investigator in the development of the Bell University ePresence Laboratory that is currently exploring the role of interactivity in webcasting. An article on Virtual environments is scheduled for publication in an international encyclopedia this summer. |
