| Abstract
|
Photo-realistic 3D modeling is a challenging problem and has been a research topic for many years.
Quick generation of photo-realistic three-dimensional calibrated models using a hand-held device
is highly desirable for applications ranging from forensic investigation, mining, to mobile robotics.
A 3D imaging system called the instant Scene Modeler (iSM) is presented that can automatically create
3D models using a hand-held stereo camera. The user points the camera at the scene of interest and
the system will create a photo-realistic 3D calibrated model automatically within minutes.
Field tests in various applications have been carried out, including forensics, mining, military
and rover exploration.

| Biography
|
Stephen Se is with the Research and Development department at MDA Space Mission,
developing computer vision systems for space and terrestrial applications. He received
B.Eng. degree with first class honours in Computing at Imperial College of Science,
Technology and Medicine, University of London in 1995 and a D.Phil. degree in the
Robotics Research Group at the University of Oxford in 1999. He then worked as a post-doctoral
researcher at the University of British Columbia (1999-2001) on vision-based mobile robot localization.
His research interests include computer vision, mobile robotics, 3D modeling and artificial intelligence.
