Abstract:
Wireless, broadband, pagers, cell phones - the demand for more advanced and better communication systems is ever increasing. At a fundamental level, the components in these communications systems such as antennas, inductors, and connectors are electromagnetic in nature. However, to understand system operation, it is necessary to know how the electromagnetic behavior affects circuit and system level performance. This talk presents a methodology for integrating electromagnetic simulation into the wider arena of system-level design. The methodology is based on a number of technologies that increase electromagnetic automation and provide reduced order models of the dominant poles and zeros of the electromagnetic system. Using a top-down approach, system level schematics are first produced using high-level models. These components are subsequently refined by means of circuit level simulation and these circuit level models are further refined as needed by using detailed electromagnetic reduced order models. The methodology is employed to achieve high- level design goals at the system level by varying low-level component characteristics such as antenna far field patterns at the electromagnetics level.
