IEEE Toronto Section - About

About the IEEE Toronto Section
The Toronto section has grown from its beginnings as the first AIEE section outside the United States in 1903 to a large diverse technical and professional organization.   The membership (November 2004) totals 3570 including 181 life members and 581 student members.   The Section logo is an adaptation of the IEEE Canada logo, which is explained here.   If you are not familiar with the IEEE, please click here.

The IEEE Toronto Section is a community for electrical and computer engineers and others with related interests. We
- hold professional/technical meetings, tutorials, conferences, etc. for our members and guests,
- actively support education through our network of student branches,
- enhance our local activities with products and services from IEEE Canada and IEEE worldwide,
- recognize excellence through our awards program.
Please explore our web site for more information about participating.

Over the past year, there were 19 meetings of the 10 technical chapters involving 18 of IEEE's Societies, along with the annual section meeting, and the inaugural meeting of the newly formed life member chapter.   Most of the meetings are in the downtown part of Toronto but the section territory includes a much larger area.

There are 2 university student branches and 9 more in technical and community colleges.

Section activities are coordinated by a group of 20 some volunteers who meet about 6 times a year and conduct business between meetings using the full spectrum of electronic and tradition communication chanels.

You will find more details about the section, its members, and its activities in other pages of this web site.   If you have any questions or concerns, please use the "questions/suggestions" link at the top of our home page.

Communication
The Section distributes an email message (E-News) every month to all Section members who supply IEEE with their email addresses and do not "opt out", and anyone else who wishes to be included.   E-News alerts recipients that the latest newsletter has been published on our web site.   We maintain an archive of past issues on this web site.   If you are NOT a member of this Section, you can subscribe or unsubscribe to our newsletter using the web form provided on the "news" page.   Section members are automatically subscribed using the email addresses provided by members and stored in the IEEE membership database.   As of November 2004, 87% of IEEE Toronto members are sent E-News, and everyone who can view our web site can read the full newsletter.

Members - you can check your stored address using the "Manage Your Membership Today" button on our membership page.   The Section also mails a printed annual newsletter to all members.   A PDF version is archived on this web site - see the news page. The Section uses various lists of email addresses to contact members and non-members of this Section - this is described in our email policy statement.

Only Section members can join our on-line community and interact with other members. To find out more about about these features or to join, please view this page.

Geographic Area
The Toronto Section encompasses a wide area that includes much more than the City of Toronto.   The Section bylaws define these additional areas as: Brampton, Mississauga, Woodbridge, Thornhill, Richmond Hill, Stouffville, Markham, Ajax, Pickering, Oakville, Oshawa, North Bay, Sudbury, Saulte Ste Marie, and the surrounding areas of these cities, with the further provision that an individual member within any of these locations may elect to be listed under a neighbouring Section, if he or she so desires because of a close affinity between personal technical areas of interest and the established activities of such neighbouring Section.   Within any of the neighbouring Sections, an individual member can elect to be listed under the Toronto Section.

Advertising and Promotion
The Toronto Section welcomes advertising in our annual printed/mailed newsletter and for our web site on our home page and newletter.   Rates and policies are described on this page.

The section requests that other websites containing information or links to this web site use the following image to represent this section where a graphical image is appropriate.
